St Peter and St Paul's Church

Church Street

Burton Pidsea

St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church has stood in the heart of our village since 1160. Today the church is still an important part of village life and a warm welcome is offered to everyone who comes through the door. The church is well maintained and our worship tries to meet the needs of all the parishioners.

We have strong links with the village community, local primary school and our neighbouring churches at Elstronwick and Humbleton.

A church has stood on this site for many centuries but the earliest parts of this building date back to c.1160. It has been added to and altered over the centuries until it is as you see it today. Significant features are the late medieval font, the Victorian pulpit, magnificent stained glass windows dating from 1400-1920 in memory of members of the Clapham and Raines family as well as the one dedicated to Edward Stamford, Tpr Scots Greys, killed in action 1918 and the stone altar installed 2004.

In 1465, the church became known as St. Peter’s and later in 1542 it was dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul. In 1966 it was recorded as a Grade 1 listed building to preserve it’s  heritage.

“Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
 Worship the LORD with gladness;
come before him with joyful songs.
Know that the LORD is God.
It is he who made us, and we are his ;
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.
For the LORD is good and his love endures forever;
 his faithfulness continues through all generations.
 Psalm 100. 1-5.
